StAUSCC 112-5 (18 overs) beat St Andrews University Students 3rd XI 111-7 (18 overs) by 5 wickets
(J. Crooks 53*, J Threlfall 17)

StAUSCC opened up the season with a last-ball victory in the dark against the students.

With Dom winning the first toss of the season, and as ever choosing to bowl first, Phil made a breakthrough in the 3rd over taking the first wicket of the season courtesy of a fine catch by James T. The 2nd wicket partnership pushed the score into the 40s before Francis struck in his first over of an excellent spell, Paul grasping the ball at the second attempt.

Jon had the joy of taking a wicket with his first ball, a steepling catch taking by our student ringer – who also took a wicket in a good spell. With Pat removing the captain to halt a middle-order resurgence the students struggled their way to 111-7, with just 18 runs coming in the final 5 overs.

Opening up in response Dominic’s brief stay included a dropped catch before being run-out. Ross and James took the score to 31 before Ross, and then Fahad, fell to left-arm spin as StAUSCC looked in some trouble. However, James C and Paul stabilised the innings with sensible batting and eager running in a partnership of 33 to put the chase back on track before Paul fell with 48 runs needed off the last 6 overs.

James T then pushed StAUSCC towards victory- hitting his second ball to the boundary as he upped the run rate, with James C also finding the boundary more regularly. With scores level and two balls to go JT was denied the final glory by a thin edge behind, falling for an excellent 17. This left Francis to stride fearlessly out and hit his first ball over the top in near darkness to complete the victory, with JC unbeaten with a well-judged 53.

A good start to the season with fine bowling spells from all and some tidy catching, and the partnership between the James’s taking us to victory.

StAUSCC 207-5 (38.5 overs) beat St Andrews University Students XI 205-9 (40 overs) by 5 wickets
(D. Bransden 84*, R. McLennan 39) (J. Crooks 4-45, R. Earnshaw 2-25)

StAUSCC completed consecutive victories over the students after a fine run-chase in our first Sunday game of the season.

Phil and James C opened the bowling and JC was unfortunate to see an early chance put down by Dom at 1st slip, but further chances were to follow (and importantly were taken). The initial breakthrough came with the score on 30, JC taking a return catch to remove the opposition captain after some confusion over whether it was a bump ball or not. Rebekah was brought into the attack as first change and immediately caused problems with a tight line, removing the other opener courtesy of a catch by Phil at mid-on.

A tidy spell from Jon, including the only maiden of the innings, meant the students weren’t able to up the rate and the frustration showed as they attempted to hit Rebekah over the top – Stefan safely taking the chance. With Pat, 1-15 off his 5 overs, and Dave also getting in on the wickets the students were left at 80-5 at the halfway stage. There followed a 71 run partnership before the initially shot-less no. 7 tried to clear Stan at mid-on, only to see an impressive stretch and one-handed take to give James his 2nd wicket.

The opener began to play more aggressively as he approached, and passed, his century and with the aid of some innovative shots from the no. 9 the Students managed to push the total past the 200 mark – before both batsman were removed – JC taking his 4th wicket and Dave rewarded for an excellent final over with his 2nd wicket.

In response Ross and Dom pounced on some short bowling, generously aided by wides, as the StAUSCC innings got off to a swift start, racking up 34 in the first 5 overs. The pair continued to keep the scoreboard moving , taking advantage of any loose bowling on offer and running aggressively, and at the halfway drinks StAUSCC were looking good at 101-0, a century opening stand that may well be the first for the club since 2006.

The partnership ended on 105 as Ross was lbw to the Students’ left-arm spinner for a valuable 39. The spinner was to take the next wicket as well, Paul lbw after a brief cameo. Callum played a couple of nice shots before top-edging a short one behind as the students sensed a way back in to the game.

However, Stan came in to steady the ship, with Dom ensuring the required run-rate was kept in check by taking 15 off an over. With Stan clean-bowled for 13 after a partnership of 41, James C nudged the ball around to bring the target within 6 runs – which he tried to achieve in one hit, edging behind. James T then came in to ensure there was no need for the last over, hitting 6 off 3 balls to bring victory, with Dom batting through to finish on 84 not out.

StAUSCC 241-5 (45 overs) beat St Modan 166 a/o (40.4 overs) by 75 runs
(J. Crooks 119*, D. Bransden 42, J. Hey 38) (D. Miller 3-16, J. Crooks 3-30, S. Frankland 3-44)

St Andrews continued their winning start to the season with a convincing victory in their opening league game.

Being put in to bat Ross departed in the 4th over, with Stan following soon after as a victim to the vagaries of the C1 bounce – one hitting him on the nose before being bowled by one that kept low. At the other end Josh, opening in his first game of the season, ensured that runs continued to come at a reasonable pace, and was joined by James in a good partnership of 59 as the score advanced to 93-3. However as drinks approached Josh fell attempting to hit over the top against the slow bowlers – going for an excellent 38.

Dominic and James then put together a partnership of 109 – despatching the bad balls and running quickly between the wickets to ensure St Modans were unable to keep the runs down. James had one slice of luck with a drop at cover, but brought up his 50 with straight 6 and then began to accelerate to his 2nd century of the club. Dom fell towards the end after a brief flurry of attacking strokes as the last 5 overs approached, caught and bowled for 42. James continued on to 119 not out, and with Callum providing support at the end, the StAUSCC total reached an imposing 241-5.

Phil opened up and was unlucky to see an early chance go begging behind the wicket, though he soon bowled the other opener. With both he and Dave delivering tight spells St Modans had only made it to 33-1 off 11 overs before Ross took an excellent leg-side catch to dismiss the dangerous Sultan in the last over of Dave’s spell. With Angus settling in to an economical 9 over spell the run-rate was always getting away from St Modans despite the attempts of the remaining opener, as they reached drinks at 85-2. The introduction of Stan soon brought reward, with one turning sharply to clean bowl the St Modans captain, before Angus took an excellent catch off a skier.

With James then brought back into the attack he made amends for an expensive first spell by taking 3 wickets in an over to derail any remaining hopes of St Modans – the pick being a sharp caught and bowled chance. A brief flurry took St Modans up to 166 but Stan chipped in with a third wicket – Phil continuing his fine catching form, and Dave was brought back on to finish the innings with wickets in consecutive balls – the opener finally going for a fine 82 with Ross claiming a third catch

A good batting performance gave us enough runs to bowl at – with a few chances going down that allowed St Modans to get closer than they should.
